2018 Rotary Youth ProgramsThe Rotary Club of Kissimmee Bay supports many youth activities including the Rotary Youth Exchange and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Rotary Youth ExchangeRotary Youth Exchange is a Rotary International student exchange program for students in secondary school. Since 1929, Rotary International has sent young people around the globeto experience new cultures. Currently, about 9,000 students are sponsored by Rotary clubsevery year. Typically, students are sent to another country for a year-long stay, generally living with multiple host families during the year. They are expected to perform daily tasks within thehousehold as well as attend school in the host country. Short term exchange programs are alsoquite common. These typically involve direct student exchanges between two families arrangedthrough Rotary to coincide with major school holiday periods. Rotary Youth Leadership AwardsRotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary clubsaround the globe. Each year, thousands of young people ages 13 to 18 attend these programs.Participants are sponsored by Rotary clubs to attend the event which is organizied and facilitatedby the Rotary District committee comprised of local Rotarians. Participants are chosen for theirleadership potential and are expected to return to their school to implement the skills learned.The format of the event varies from district to district, but commonly takes the form of a seminar,camp or workshop to develop character and leadership skills and to learn about Rotary.RYLA aims to:•Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth.•Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders.•Encourage leadership of youth by youth.•Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.Every RYLA program covers the following core topics:•Fundamentals of leadership.•Ethics of positive leadership.•Importance of communication skills in effective leadership.•Problem solving and conflict management.•Rotary’s purpose and service to the community.•Building self-confidence and self-esteem.•Elements of community and global citizenship.
